Dyslexia is a learning disorder indicated by impairment of the ability to recognise and comprehend written words. According to research studies, approximately 10 percent of the population has some level of dyslexia. This same research indicates that an estimated four percent of those diagnosed with dyslexia are children and about 375,000 of them are school-aged.
Dyslexia often runs in families and can affect individuals regardless of intelligence, race or social class. Undiagnosed dyslexia can have a direct effect on both grades and self-esteem, causing students to perform poorly in certain educational areas and as a result become frustrated and increasingly less self-confident.
Often parents find themselves confused when faced with supporting and helping a child with dyslexia. Parents often do not feel they have adequate knowledge of dyslexia or are not aware of the techniques and strategies that help. Dyslexia tutors can be of great benefit to those dealing with this type of learning disability. By utilising specialised Tutoring methods and carefully planned strategies, tutors can help students beat difficulties caused by dyslexia.
